March Mayhem

If any of my readers were following March Mayhem you would know about all the big upsets this year. First, I’m going to say thank goodness Zynga did NOT move past the first round, even though it messed up my bracket I’m at peace with this. I did realize once the voting started I should have had BioWare beating Bungie because of Dragon Age 2. I also didn’t have Bethsada moving past the second round which was another mistake. Silly mistakes on my part, sorry! However! I did call Mojang the creators of Minecraft to win the whole thing. The toughest round for Mojang in my opinion was the first round against the number one seed, Nintendo. Nintendo fanboys were highly upset about the upset beating however, you have to take your heart out of the competition and think logically.
Let’s be honest, Nintendo doesn’t have the online multiplayer ability that Xbox 360 Live supports or the Playstation Network. Nintendo produces classic games and has done a great job of making them modern, however, Minecraft is a creative, out of the box (no pun intended) game that Mojang has had great success with. The second toughest round for Mojang was against Valve, another first seed. I’m a Valve fangirl all the way and am happy for Valve and their achievements; however, I believe Mojang has the fan base and deserved to win. The third and final round toughest round was against another first seed, BioWare. Although the voting wasn’t as close and the others, this was the final round and people were on the edge of their seats awaiting the official results. I know a lot of BioWare fanboys that supported Mojang the whole way. So I’m not surprised that BioWare didn’t have a lot of votes. Also, I heard that Dragon Age 2 wasn’t what the fanboys ordered so to BioWare’s demise the fanboys rooting for the most amazing game out there! I have to be a little honest, I was a little surprised Mojang actually won. They absolutely deserved it but usually when it comes to the fan based voting competitions Indie games are usually the ones that don’t get recongnied. This was truly a Cinderella story for Mojang and it’s a great accomplishment for them.

Hunger Games!

Just as a review Hunger Games is about Katniss Everdeen who is a seventeen year old girl who takes care of her family in a post-apocalyptic society, which involves 12 districts as well as the Capitol. Every year there is an event called the Reaping and it basically picks one boy and one girl to be a tribute from each district for the Hunger Games. Basically, the Hunger Games is an event where all the tributes from each district are thrown into an arena and the last one standing wins.
I began this series about two weeks ago and at first I have to be honest, it was a little slow. However, once I past the first 5 chapters I was completely engrossed in the series. I felt the series was fast paced and kept me on the edge of my seat with numerous turns in the storyline.
The Hunger Game series is a trilogy, which includes the books Catching Fire and Mockingjay written by Suzanne Collins. After I read Hunger Games I went out the next morning to purchase the next book, Catching Fire, because they ended the book in a way that you wanted to know what was next. Even though the book didn’t quite pick up where Hunger Games left off I was still highly involved with the story that I read it in three days. Catching Fire didn’t end in such a way that made me want to buy Mockingjay right away but I was still really interested in the knowing what happened next. When I first started reading the Mockingjay I wasn’t as excited because I already had a preconceived idea of how the story was going to go and the book was going along as planned. However, towards the end I just wanted to stop reading. I got to a point where there was a plot twist and I was so enraged with what I was reading that all I wanted to do was stop reading. Even though I felt like I needed to stop reading I kept going. I think at this point I was so angry that I wasn’t really absorbing the ending which I have been thinking lately that I should go back and read it to fully gather what happened in the end.
After I put down the book I was completely upset, I cried, I complained to my friends and family about how upset I was about the ending but as I was trying to go to sleep that night after finishing the series and was pondering upon my thoughts of what I was going to say to other people I came to the conclusion that it’s not your typical story book ending. After coming to this realization I really started to like Suzanne Collins for taking such a leap and ending it the way that she did.
If you’ve read the series and want to know why I was upset please read on further.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!(highlight with cursor to read)
Are you reading this and haven’t read the series yet? Please don’t. It will completely ruin the whole series. So STOP READING!!! Unless you’ve read the series then continue on.
Rage Alert
What I was most upset about in Mockingjay is that Prim dies. The whole reason for the series is because Katniss protects her sister from the Hunger Games and then in the last book they kill her!! I felt like I just wasted two weeks of my time on a story that was more or less based on protecting her family and more specifically her sister. I just felt like all those emotions went to nothing. Also, I was upset that Gale and Katniss no longer speak longer. I wasn’t upset that she ended up marrying Peeta even though I was on Team Gale, but I felt they just kinda dumped it on you in the end. Then again as I said before, after Prim died I was so outraged that I wasn’t really tuned into the story any longer.

Archer

Archer

Article by Charles Guthrie

Paging Dr. Loggins, you’re in the Danger Zone. Well, maybe not you, but these folks at ISIS definitely are.

Archer may only be in its second season, but it’s become a big sensation ever since the debut of its ten-episode long first season. Our hero (if you wish to call him that), a suave secret agent and extremely egotistical ladies man named Sterling Archer (voiced by Henry Jon Benjamin) is the filter of childish innocence mixed with adult humor. It may seem like an uninteresting solution, but given that he works as a secret agent for his mother’s spy agency and has quite the retinue of equally estranged co-workers, one can see how his ego can easily get him through a stressful day at the office.

The setup isn’t too far from what you would expect from an almost sitcom like take on modern day technological advances and social norms mixed with a Cold War era idea and superstition about the espionage field. Well come to think of it, maybe that isn’t too easy to picture at first. The unique feature of the series is its writing style, specifically for the dialogue, pitching its own inside-joke type memes in many episodes and dishing out its fair share of witty one-liners. For instance, one of the more prominent ongoing gags throughout the series has been the aptly timed references to Kenny Loggins hit song Danger Zone. Anytime someone is pushing their luck, or just sets themselves up for the witty reference, the opportunity is not passed up. Seriously, you’re in the DANGERRR ZONE!

The supporting cast is just as memorable as Sterling Archer himself, if not more memorable. He and his mother Mallory Archer are always bickering over something, with a conversation flow that seems more than simple routine by this point in their lives together. His ex-girlfriend and fellow secret agent Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler) are also constantly bickering, more so over Lana’s disgust at Sterling’s unhealthy connections with his mother and extremely egotistical behavior. A fair portion of the drama, as well as the plethora of witty remarks, stems from this rivalry between Sterling and Lana. They aren’t the only ones caught up in it all though, there is an entire support staff at ISIS that is included in the shenanigans. There are many worth mentioning, but I believe Dr. Krieger deserves the limelight here. He plays no real major role other than that of comic relief (needed that in a comedy show right?). It’s not a simple bit of relief however; Krieger is a…strange man. He is a very, very strange man, harboring a wide range of sexual fetishes and other related interests that serve to break the ice through extremely awkward conversations. From his hobo-erotic (yes, hobo-erotic) sexual fantasies to his extremely innovative yet quite practically useless inventions, Krieger is always bringing that awkward laugh out in the viewer, often followed by a sincere “Wtf?!” moment.

Season one set the stage for the characters and their personalities, with little real development of any long storyline or problem that takes up multiple episodes. Season two is shaping up to be a real in-depth project at drawing out more actual story and meaning from these characters, following things on a basis of development as opposed to stand alone comedy pieces. Not that the latter was bad for the first season or anything; Archer hardly needs much of a developing story to be wildly entertaining. It is nice to see that it keeps its unique style and sense of rhetoric comedy intact while shifting gears though. So far season two has been quite the development. I won’t spoil any of it for hopeful viewers out there, but it is shaping up to be ten times better than the first season. And if you haven’t seen that yet, then you are seriously missing out. This is prime meme material for the internet or your water-cooler breaks at the office. Don’t let yourself slip into…

The DANGER ZONE!

Sorry, I had to one last time.

Mac Gamers....Seriously?

Caution: Rage Attack
You know what really irks me? (Yes I used the word irk)...Mac "gamers". I swear every time you turn around Apple has a new overpriced item on the line, and even before you can save up for this new shiny Apple item a new one is on the line for even more money. Now if their iPods, iPads and Macbook Pro's aren't enough for you they're starting to swarm the Steam community. The only bonus to that is that Valve's community actually get's larger and we like a successful Valve. Unfortunately Valve wants to create a "thriving Mac game community" http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99227-Valve-Hopes-for-Thriving-Mac-Game-Community Fine, just don't forget about the REAL gamers!
I know Microsoft isn't ideal either but when it comes to gaming PC is the only way to go. Also, PC's are always upgradeable whereas Apple...well you can upgrade...to a new COMPUTER model. Replacing Mac's eventually are going to lead Apple to a downfall because people are going to keep having to replace their whole computer. Also, who can actually game with only one mouse button or without the scroll wheel? Are Mac users retarded in the sense that they need a dumbified Operating System, mouse and keyboard? I'm sorry is it too confusing having TWO mouse buttons and having an oversimplified non-customizable Operating System?
In the past I haven't loved any of Microsoft Windows however, Windows 7 has really done something new and I love it!
Am I the only gamer raged about Mac's?

March Mayhem

One of my friends lead me to The Escapist's "March Mayhem 2011: Developers Showdown". I encourage all my friends and my readers to participate in this fun challenge. Alienware is the sponsor of this year's challenge and is giving away some awesome gaming laptops as prizes. Also, by just filling out a bracket you get 25 entries and all you have to do is be a registered member which is free! We like free.
Last year the war ended up against Bioware and Valve. Valve and the Steam community ended up pulling together and won the whole thing but Bioware almost got booted from the competition by Zynga. Seriously...ZYNGA?!?!  This year the gaming market is different because Valve hasn't release anything new however, with the highly anticipation of Portal 2 they surely deserve something. The bracket has your typical big name gaming brands such as Blizzard, Capcom, Nintendo, Bungie, Crytek and Popcap as well as indie developers Mojang which developed "Minecraft" as well as Team Meat for "Super Meat Boy" and Rovio for "Angry Birds and Angry Bird Seasons".
I've decided not to bore everyone with my whole analysis of my bracket decision instead I will go over my "elite eight" and work my way to who I think will win the competition.

My 2011 March Mayhem Developer's Showdown Bracket at The Escapist

North Division

Blizzard - Do I really need to say much about this? It's obvious that Blizzard has an awesome community with World of Warcraft and since Blizzard did put out WoW: Cataclysm back in December it's attracting even more players to the World of Warcraft. Although I do not like the fact that you must play 8-20 hours of WoW a day to get anywhere in the game and people have lost lives this way. It's not about what I like it's about what the fans like and clearly the fans like WoW.

Zynga- As much as I like some of Zynga's games and Facebook applications I am disappointed with the fact that you have to have "x" amount of friends to do certain things within the game. However, recently it seems they have changed it by letting you unlock certain aspects of the game without having "x" amount of friends by allowing you to exchange you "cash" that you receive with each level up or you have opt to buy some with a credit card or PayPal account but sometimes the exchange rate seems outrageous. Ratios such as: Either "Gain two new neighbors or cash in for 50 cash" I'm sorry but I'm not going to buy 50 cash and I certainly am not going to save my cash by leveling up 50 times. Anyways, although many people are addicted and play Zynga games I believe that developers are marketing the people who are not true gamers but just want to kill sometime at work or school.

West Division

Mojang AB- Wow is all I can say about Minecraft. When my brother first showed me this game I was like "uhhh really? So you just go around collecting stuff, building stuff and then protecting it so those monster things  don't destroy it....right..." One night however, I was watching "Dogs of the Internet" stream their game play on Livestream Procaster and began to watch one of their members play this game. I became very much intrigued. and wanted to know what I could build and develop on my own. This wasn't enough for me to go out and buy the game. It wasn't until one of my friends came over and let me use his account that I was sold on this game. I was even more sold on the muliplayer mode and went into multiple servers and saw other people's art work.

Neversoft- Oh Neversoft. Although you put out an impressive line of Guitar Hero's it's sad that you couldn't get your act together to pull through. I guess you had to have seen it coming because there was only so much more they could have done with the line of Guitar Hero's to make it profitable. Also with Neversoft going down at the beginning of this year I believe that it will no longer an active competitor in competitions in the future.

East Division

Bungie- Bungie has had an impressive lineup of Halo games. However, I am disappointed that what they've basically done is remake Halo 3 two times over again with Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. The Halo community obviously has a high rated fan base and I'm quite sure fans would like to see more Halo or even another game series.

Ubisoft Montreal- Ubisoft has continued to market and develop creative game playing idea with Assassin's Creed series. I have liked the unique ideas that you can do in these games as well and the creative storyline. What really makes Ubisoft stand out is that Assassin's Creed is not the only game they continue to work on. They've also developed:
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
Tom Clancey's Splinter Cell Series
Far Cry 2
This is a pretty impressive lineup for Ubisoft and each game series is unique from the other. I can say that Ubisoft has successfully made quite an impact on the gaming industry.

South Division

Valve- Although Valve didn't release anything in 2010 they continue to develop and update Steam. I know Steam has it's kinks but they've really done a great deal with it. Also fans knew that Valve was working ferociously on Portal 2 which looks amazing! If you haven't looked at the upcoming trailers, take a look at them.

.

I am a little disappointed however that Valve has yet to work on Half Life 2: Episode 3. I will be further disappointed with Valve if HL2:E3 is a total waste. I want it to be epic. Then again, Valve has yet to let me down.

Capcom- Although Marvel vs Capcom 3 didn't come out until this year, it was highly anticipated and I know a handful of people who have been waiting for it for 10 years. Capcom has released pretty epic games including Street Fighter series, Mega Man, additions to Resident Evil and Devil May Cry as well as Lost Planet 2. I can say that the Resident Evil stories are starting to get old and I think Capcom needs to cut ties with it before they end up losing tons of money. With Lost Planet 2, Capcom took some vital hits because there were some developmental mishaps but the game play was rated pretty fairly.

Elite Eight Stacking

Blizzard vs Zynga- Do I need to say much with this one? If Zynga wins then we might as well say goodbye to gaming as we know it.
Winner: Blizzard

Mojang AB vs. Neversoft- I believe that Minecraft has such a great concept and it's fresh and new that gamers are eating it up. Also it's basically a no brainer here since Neversoft went dead.
Winner: Mojang AB

Bungie vs Ubisoft Montreal- This one was a little more difficult but still, Bungie has yet to develop another Halo game besides the twice done over Halo 3. I will give it more credit though because Halo 3 was received great reviews and that is basically all that the Xbox Live community is based around. However, with that said, I believe that Ubisoft has the upper hand because they did more with Assassin's Creed and they also made more games besides just Assassin's Creed and they weren't epic fails.
Winner: Ubisoft Montreal

Valve vs Capcom: UGH, this is a tough one considering Valve didn't so much in 2010. I do believe that the Steam Community is going to pull through on this one though and vote for Valve. Next year's bracket will be more interesting with Marvel vs Capcom 3 on the docket representing Capcom.
Winner: Valve

Final Four

Blizzard vs Ubisoft Montreal- This is where we start getting into the tougher decisions because even though the only thing that is really going for Blizzard is the WoW community it's a strong community and as said before with Cataclysm it's attracting even more fans. With Ubisoft I believe that even though they have a strong lineup of games that Blizzard will easily steal this one.
Winner: Blizzard

Mojang AB vs Valve- Ah, my babies. Now I may sound contradictory by saying I don't understand games that you must play 8-20 hours a day to get anywhere with but with Minecraft you can make as little or as much as you want. Your imagination determines the game. The only reason Valve made it so far in my list is because they have the Steam Community and that community is huge.
Winner: Mojang AB

Championship Match

Blizzard vs Mojang- Since Mojang is relatively new I must say it has made quite the impression of gamers and  a high standard for indie game developers. The creative and unique idea of harvesting your own materials and basically making it whatever your want is a great idea. With both Mojang and Blizzard it seems you would have to find hours, days and weeks in your schedule to play the games however, with Blizzard if you decided to take a break everyone is moving on without you. With Minecraft, there is no real objective which makes the game awesome because who cares if you take a break for a week. Your materials and objects that you've made are still going to be there. If you're in multiplayer mode and you decide to take a break, oh well. Your friends have just showed you what life they don't have by making a town along with a giant castle while you were away. Therefore, I believe that Mojang has the upperhand and will be the winner

Overall Winner: Mojang AB

As much as I would like to take all the credit for coming up with the winner all by myself, I cannot take full credit. After many discussions between my friend's and such I would like to say thanks to my buddies Alex and Charles. :-)

Also, if you have a developer that you believe should have made it further in my bracket or want my perspective of why I dropped a certain developer let me know! I would love to share and talk to you!
